Beginner's Guide: How to Play Galactico
Welcome, Commander. Galactico: Frontier Wars is a free browser space-strategy MMO where you start with a single planet and grow it into a galactic empire spanning nine galaxies. Nothing to download, nothing to install — it runs entirely in your browser on desktop or mobile.
This guide walks you through everything you need for a strong start: what to build first, which research matters early, how to launch your first raid, and how to avoid the mistakes that hold most new players back.

Understanding your home planet
Your home planet is your base. It has a fixed number of fields (build slots) and three core resources ticking up automatically as your mines produce them:
- Metal — the most abundant resource. Used in almost everything.
- Crystal — scarcer and more valuable. Critical for research and advanced ships.
- Deuterium — the fuel of the universe. Every fleet mission burns it.
Every building, ship, defense structure and research costs some combination of these three. Master the economy and you master the game.
Step 1 — Build your economy first
The single most common beginner mistake: building ships before the economy can support them. Don't do it. Spend your first sessions leveling up your resource mines.
Your opening priority order:
- Metal Mine — upgrade first. Metal is your foundation.
- Crystal Mine — keep it close behind Metal Mine level.
- Solar Plant — add energy capacity every few mine upgrades so production stays at 100%.
- Deuterium Synthesizer — bring it up third. Deuterium is less urgent early but critical later.
- Metal / Crystal / Deuterium Storage — upgrade before long offline sessions to avoid overflow.
A simple rule: if your energy is in deficit (check the production numbers), upgrade the Solar Plant before doing anything else. Mines operating at reduced power because of an energy deficit is wasted time.
Step 2 — Build your Robotics Factory early
The Robotics Factory reduces construction time for every other building and facility. Leveling it to 2 or 3 early pays for itself many times over as you build everything else faster. Don't skip it.
Step 3 — Get your Research Lab running
Build a Research Lab as soon as your economy is stable. Research is the gate in front of the entire tech tree — better ships, faster fleets, stronger weapons, colonization and espionage all sit behind specific technologies.
Early research priority:
- Espionage Technology (2–3 levels minimum) — lets you scout enemy planets before attacking. Scouting before striking is the most important habit in the game.
- Computer Technology — increases your fleet slot count. More fleets running simultaneously = faster growth.
- Combustion Drive — required for your first combat ships.
- Energy Technology — prerequisite for several other techs you'll need later.
See the full Research & Technology Guide for the complete tech tree.
Step 4 — Build your Shipyard and first fleet
Once your economy hums, build a Shipyard and start producing ships. Galactico has 13 ship types across three roles:
- Cargo / logistics — haulers that carry resources. You need cargo capacity to bring loot home.
- Combat — your fighting ships. These do the actual battling.
- Recon — Spy Probes that scout enemy planets.
Your first fleet should be: a batch of Light Fighters for combat, some Small Cargos to carry the loot, and a few Spy Probes to scout first. Keep it small and targeted rather than trying to build everything.
Step 5 — Scout before you attack
This rule is so important it deserves its own section: always send a Spy Probe before attacking. A spy report shows you what resources are sitting on a target planet and — at higher Espionage Tech levels — what defenses and fleets are there. Attacking blind is how you lose your entire first fleet on your second day.
The math of a successful raid: your fleet strength > defender strength, and you have enough cargo capacity to carry home the loot. Only attack when both conditions are met. See the Espionage Guide and How to Raid for the full detail.
Step 6 — Protect yourself with basic defense
While you're out raiding, other players are scouting you. Planetary defenses fight incoming attackers automatically — they don't fly off and leave you exposed like ships can. Even a modest line of Rocket Launchers makes you a less attractive target, because experienced attackers do the same scout-first calculation you do and skip defended planets.
See the Defense Guide for the full list of structures and the recommended build order.
Beginner quick-start checklist
- ✅ Upgrade Metal Mine, Crystal Mine, Deuterium Synthesizer in rotation
- ✅ Keep Solar Plant energy ahead of mine demand
- ✅ Upgrade storage before long offline sessions
- ✅ Build Robotics Factory early (reduces all build times)
- ✅ Build Research Lab and get Espionage Tech to level 2+
- ✅ Build Shipyard, then a small raiding fleet (combat + cargo ships)
- ✅ Always scout before attacking
- ✅ Put up basic Rocket Launcher defense
