Economy Guide — Metal, Crystal & Deuterium
The economy is the foundation of everything in Galactico. Players who master resource production, energy management, and trade mechanics grow 3–5x faster than those who don't. This guide covers the advanced economy layer — beyond the basics of leveling mines.
Production rates and the energy multiplier
Your actual resource production equals your theoretical mine output multiplied by your energy efficiency ratio. If you produce 1,000 energy but consume 1,200 energy, your efficiency is 83% and every mine runs at 83% of its rated output.
This is the most common hidden tax on new players. A Metal Mine 10 running at 70% efficiency produces the same as a Metal Mine 9 at full power — but you paid the Metal Mine 10 upgrade cost. Always check your energy balance before upgrading a mine.
The formula: if energy demand > energy supply, production rate = mine output × (energy supply / energy demand).
Optimal mine ratios
At most stages of the game, you want your mines roughly in this ratio:
- Metal Mine: always highest level
- Crystal Mine: approximately Metal Mine level minus 2
- Deuterium Synthesizer: approximately Crystal Mine level minus 1–2
This reflects the natural resource consumption of the game — Metal is used in everything, Crystal is used in most things, Deuterium is used primarily for fleet fuel and late research.
Exception: heavy fleet players need more Deuterium and should push the Synthesizer higher. A large active fleet can consume Deuterium faster than a Synthesizer 2 levels behind can produce it.
Avoiding storage overflow
The single biggest waste in Galactico is storage overflow. Resources produced past your storage cap are gone — permanently. To avoid it:

Before any long offline period (sleep, work, school): estimate how much each mine will produce in that time. If Metal Mine produces 50,000 Metal/hour and you're offline for 8 hours, you need 400,000 Metal capacity. If you only have 200,000 capacity, upgrade the Metal Storage first.

The overflow calculation: (hours offline × hourly production per resource) < current storage capacity. If any resource fails this check, upgrade that storage.

Spend resources into the queue before going offline. A build in progress doesn't overflow — the resources are already committed. If your queue finishes before you return, overflow starts then. Stack builds to cover the offline window.
The Resource Trader
The Trader lets you exchange resources at daily fluctuating market rates. The key use cases:
Surplus to deficit conversion: if you're Metal-rich but Crystal-short for a research project, trade excess Metal for Crystal at the current rate. The rate fluctuates daily, so check before large trades.
Deuterium liquidation: excess Deuterium (from a high-level Synthesizer on a cold planet) can be traded for Metal or Crystal. Useful when fleet operations are light.
Pre-war stockpiling: before a major military build-up, use the Trader to stockpile whichever resource your ships cost most. Battleships are Metal and Crystal heavy; Bombers cost significant Deuterium.
Multi-planet economy
Colonizing a second planet is one of the highest-leverage decisions in the mid-game. The compound effect of two sets of mines running simultaneously accelerates growth dramatically. Astrophysics Technology unlocks colonies.
Planet assignment strategy:
- Your home planet: balanced development (mines, research, shipyard)
- Colony 1: specialize in whichever resource your home planet underproduces
- Colony 2+: consider temperature when placing Deuterium-focused planets (colder = more Deuterium)
Resource transport: use Large Cargo ships to move resources from production planets to your primary build planet. The round-trip transport cost (fuel) should be less than the production value gained from specialization.
Raiding as an economic accelerator
The most resource-efficient players combine mine production with active raiding. Resources raided from inactive or low-defense players are free production that requires no build time or field slots. See the Raiding Guide for the full strategy.
The compounding loop:
- Produce resources passively
- Scout and raid inactive planets
- Combine raided resources with mine production
- Pour everything into mine upgrades
- Higher mines produce more per hour → bigger raids become affordable
A player running this loop efficiently can outpace a pure mine-grinder by 2x within the first month.
Energy management in the mid-game
As your empire expands, energy management becomes more complex:
- Solar Plants are simple and free to run. Best for most planets.
- Fusion Reactors consume Deuterium but produce more energy per field at high levels. Switch to Fusion when Solar Plants are taking too many precious fields.
- Field efficiency: a Terraformer expands fields but costs resources and Deuterium. Reserve Terraformer upgrades for planets you've identified as long-term strategic investments.
